What’s it all about?
Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution (BRLSI) is running a year-long programme of lectures, exhibitions and other events in 2009 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin, and the 150th anniversary of the publication of On The Origin Of Species.

081216charlesworth300.jpg The series actually began at the end of 2008 with the Victor Suchar Christmas Lecture, when Prof Brian Charlesworth FRS (above) posed the question What Do We Now Know About The causes Of Evolution?. It ends with this year’s Suchar Lecture, on 11th Dec 2009, when world-famous geneticist Prof Steve Jones will ask another question - Is Evolution Over?

In between, as well as an extensive science programme, the Darwin and Beyond series also includes events from the BRLSI’s Philosophy, Botany, Visual Arts and Literature programmes. We also have three exhibitions running through the year, plus collaborations with Bath’s Geological and Natural History Societies -and on the lighter (yet still informative) side, Darwin’s Worms, a “splendid combination of  accessible science and compelling drama” from Bent Architect Theatre.

It’s all being held in the (relaxed) splendour of the BRLSI’s Grade I listed home in the centre of Georgian Bath, a short distance from the Royal Crescent and Roman Baths (and a large car park). Admission costs £4 for most events (£2 for BRLSI members/students), with advance tickets available for some events at £6/£4 (click here for full details). See you there! •
