Defining Gravity

Galaxy with vivid against a star background

Ahead of the upcoming talk on the discovery of gravitational waves by Professor Mike Cruise (Professor Emeritus, Birmingham University – and a former Treasurer and President of the Royal Astronomical Society) on Friday October 4th 2024, here’s a look back at some of the recent BRLSI talks on gravity and black holes.

Earlier this year, the Herschel Astronomy Group welcomed Dr Isobel Romero-Shaw – Herschel Smith Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge – for a discussion of gravitational waves and binary black holes, while in 2023 Dr Carolin Villforth (Senior Lecturer in the Astrophysics group at the University of Bath) presented a fascinating talk on supermassive black holes, active galactic nuclei and how accreting black holes can impact their host galaxies.

For a wider, curated selection of previous science and astronomy talks from the BRLSI archive  – including the recent full-day conference on John Herschel: the Last Polymath – please visit the BRLSI YouTube page or the “Video Talks” page on the BRLSI website.

Don’t forget to check the What’s On page for details of future guest speaker & expert talks on a wide range of exciting topics from science and literature, to philosophy and music.
