INSIGHTS FROM EVOLUTIONARY PSYCHOLOGY

06 July 2021

Darwin’s sexual selection theory has used to explore stereotypical views of differences in sexual desire between the sexes. But do such differences really stand up to scrutiny? This question is explored via a review of the key texts which have developed the concepts of sexual selection and parental investment theory as explanations for human sex differences. Such texts are explored chronologically beginning with Darwin’s The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex, right through to Fred Toates’ The Evolution of Desire: How Sexual Desire Works. It is concluded that, despite reservations from some quarters, explanations of sex differences in human desire that ignore insights from evolutionary psychology are unlikely to succeed.
