The Gaskell Society with BRLSI - The Poetry of the Lancashire Cotton Famine

Date Description
19 May 2018

The Lancashire Cotton Famine is a fascinating period in British history, largely caused by the Union blockade of Confederate cotton exports during the American Civil War. This caused mass unemployment on an unprecedented scale. Dr Rennie is heading an AHRC-funded project to find, collect and interpret poetry associated with the cotton famine, bringing to life neglected verse from often labouring-class voices.
