Alien Intelligence: A.I. and Emergent Capabilities
Neil Leach
Fri 14 June at 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm BST
£3.00Neil Leach, author of Architecture in the Age of Artificial Intelligence comes to BRLSI to explore the emergent capabilities of AI and what they imply.
Artificial Intelligence, we are told, is a purely mechanical form of intelligence, that has nothing to do with biological intelligence. But does it? This lecture explores the curious case of the ‘emergent capabilities’ of Large Language Models (LLMs), and asks whether we can connect these emergent capabilities with the theory of Emergence itself, a theory that looks at how complexity emerges out of simple rules – such as in the murmuration of starlings.
Neil Leach is a professor of architecture and licensed architect from the UK. He currently directs the Doctor of Design program at FIU, and has also taught at other leading schools, including AA, Harvard, Columbia, Cornell, IaaC and SCI-Arc. He is the co-founder of DigitalFUTURES, a former researcher for NASA developing 3D printing technologies for the Moon and Mars, and an academician within the Academy of Europe.
