This month’s book club covers The End of the Affair by Graham Greene and is led by Gerie Herbert.

The End of the Affair follows the relationships between three central characters: writer Maurice Bendrix; Sarah Miles; and her husband, civil servant Henry Miles. The central theme of the novel is jealousy and obsession but along the way the novel takes in greater themes of love, morality, war, and the limits of faith.

The End of the Affair is probably Graham Greene’s most romantic novel and is based on his own affair with Lady Catherine Walston. The British edition of the novel is dedicated to her.

Things to think about whilst you’re reading:

1. Is Bendrix likeable? Did you feel you knew him?
2. How does Sarah differ from a typical heroine?
3. Does Bendrix change over the course of the novel?
4. What did you think of Henry’s position on the affair?
5. At one point Sarah pleads with God, saying “I want Maurice. I want ordinary corrupt human love.” What changes her?
Big Read is FREE for members; it’s preferable to register in advance. Non-members are very welcome to join in too! You can come to Queen Square or watch online – please select the appropriate ticket.
