Three MA music students at Bath Spa University bring their research interests to life with performance.

Nineteenth Century Opera: Culture and Influence – Alex Pinkstone

This talk centres around composers of nineteenth century opera, drawing on cultural themes/messages in their work. Alex will perform a selection of associated repertoire, including Donizetti’s ‘Una Furtiva Lagrima’.

Beethoven Sonata Form: Sonata Op.31, No. 2, ‘The Tempest’ – Violet Wong

An analysis of Beethoven’s development of sonata form structure in the 1st movement of ‘The Tempest’. The lecture recital will include performed excerpts from the sonata, as the analysis unfolds.

Sincerely Yours: Music from World War Two – Abby Parmenter

A lecture recital exploring the music from World War Two through the lens of Vera Lynn and her radio show ‘Sincerely Yours’. The lecture recital will include performances of war time classics such as ‘We’ll meet again’ and ‘The White Cliffs of Dover’, as well as exploring the power of the function of these songs being played on the radio in unifying the men in the forces with the women back home.
